Do You Need a Dumpster Permit in Colorado Springs?

A plain-English guide to Colorado Springs dumpster permit rules — when you need one, when you don't, and how much it costs.

Quick answer

You do NOT need a permit to place a dumpster on your own driveway or private property in Colorado Springs. You DO need a right-of-way permit if the roll-off has to sit on a public street, alley, or sidewalk. Permits run $30–$60 and are pulled through the City Traffic Engineering office.

When you don't need a permit

The overwhelming majority of Colorado Springs dumpster rentals never touch a permit. If the bin lands on your private driveway, side yard, back yard, business parking lot, or any surface owned by you or the property, no permit is required.

When you DO need a permit

Colorado Springs requires a Right-of-Way (ROW) Occupancy Permit any time a roll-off sits on public property — that includes the street, an alley, or a sidewalk. This comes up most often in Old Colorado City, Downtown, and Manitou Springs where narrow lots don't leave driveway room.

  • Bin on a public street or alley — permit required
  • Bin blocking a sidewalk — permit + ADA-compliant walkway plan
  • Bin in a historic overlay district — may require additional review

How to pull the permit

All American Dumpster can share the bin dimensions and swap dates you'll need on the application. We can't pull the permit on your behalf — the property owner or general contractor has to submit it.

  • Apply through Colorado Springs Traffic Engineering (coloradosprings.gov)
  • Cost: $30–$60 depending on placement duration and location
  • Lead time: usually 24–72 hours
  • Required info: exact address, bin dimensions, dates, and traffic control plan

HOA rules matter too

Even on private property, HOAs in Briargate, Wolf Ranch, Cordera, Flying Horse, and other Colorado Springs communities often have their own placement and duration rules. Check your HOA docs before you order — some cap dumpsters at 3 or 7 days.

20-Yard roll-off dumpster

Most street-placement projects are single-family remodels — a 20-yard fits along a single parking lane.
