Colorado Springs Recycling Guidelines for Dumpster Contents

Colorado Springs sorts more debris than most cities. Here's what belongs in a roll-off, what belongs curbside, and what our team pulls out and recycles for you.

Quick answer

Colorado Springs accepts cardboard, metal, clean wood, and most construction debris in a roll-off dumpster. Paint, tires, appliances with freon, e-waste, and hazardous chemicals must be handled separately. All American Dumpster pulls metals and cardboard for recycling on our end.

What Colorado Springs recycles from a roll-off

El Paso County transfer stations and the Colorado Springs recycling stream accept clean cardboard, metals, untreated wood, concrete, and asphalt shingles at dedicated intakes. Mixing them into a normal roll-off is fine — we sort on the back end so recyclables land where they should.

  • Cardboard — flattened, dry, no wax coating
  • Metals — steel, copper, aluminum, appliance shells (without freon)
  • Concrete, brick, and clean fill
  • Asphalt shingles (roofing loads sorted separately)
  • Untreated wood — framing, pallets, fencing

What has to stay out of the bin

Colorado state rules and Colorado Springs municipal code forbid a handful of items in any roll-off — no exceptions. If we spot them on pickup, they get pulled and we call you for options.

  • Paint, stains, solvents, and pool chemicals
  • Motor oil, gasoline, propane tanks
  • Tires — even one
  • Refrigerators, freezers, and AC units with freon
  • Electronics — TVs, monitors, computers (e-waste)
  • Batteries and asbestos-containing material

Where hazardous & e-waste actually go in Colorado Springs

  • El Paso County Household Hazardous Waste Facility — paint, chemicals, batteries
  • Blue Star Recyclers or Colorado Computer Recycling — e-waste
  • Local scrap yards or Home Depot / Lowe's — appliances with freon (small fee)
  • Discount Tire and most tire shops — used tires ($3–$6 each)

How to load a mixed-debris roll-off

We don't need you to pre-sort. Toss cardboard, metal, and construction debris in together — we handle the sorting when the bin comes back to the yard. The one thing to avoid is mixing food waste or wet organics into a dry debris load; it contaminates the recyclables.

Recommended dumpster
