How to Pick the Right Size

  1. 1
    Estimate your debris volume

    Roughly count pickup-truck loads. 3 loads ≈ 10-yard, 6 loads ≈ 20-yard, 9 loads ≈ 30-yard, 12 loads ≈ 40-yard.

  2. 2
Factor in weight, not just volume

Heavy debris (concrete, dirt, shingles, tile) hits the weight cap fast. For those materials, size down and stay closer to the fill line.

  3. 3
    Check your drop-off space

You need about 60' of straight approach, 10.5' of width, and clear overhead space for the truck's hoist.

  4. 4
    When in doubt, size up

Renting one size larger is almost always cheaper than a second haul. Give us a call and we'll help you pick.

What You Can't Throw In

Regardless of size, these items are prohibited in any roll-off rental for safety and regulatory reasons.

  • Paints, stains, and solvents (unless completely dried)
  • Tires
  • Automotive fluids and motor oil
  • Batteries
  • Propane tanks
  • Hazardous chemicals
  • Asbestos-containing materials
  • Medical waste
  • Refrigerators, freezers, and air conditioners containing refrigerants (unless properly prepared)
  • Explosives or flammable materials

Size Guide FAQ

What size dumpster do I need?

For small single-room projects, a 10-yard is usually right. Whole-room remodels and mid-size roofing jobs typically fit a 20-yard. Whole-home cleanouts, additions, and large roofs call for a 30-yard. Choose a 40-yard for major commercial work or high-volume light debris.

How big is a 20-yard dumpster?

Our 20-yard roll-off is roughly 22 feet long, 7.5 feet wide, and 4.5 feet tall — holding about 20 cubic yards of debris, the equivalent of about 6 pickup-truck loads, with a 2-ton (4,000 lb) included weight allowance.

How much weight can a roll-off dumpster hold?

Included weight allowance is 1 ton for the 10-yard, 2 tons for the 20-yard, 3 tons for the 30-yard, and 4 tons for the 40-yard. Overages are billed at $65 per additional ton.

Can I fill the dumpster to the top?

No. All debris must stay below the yellow fill line marked on the inside of the dumpster. Anything above the line can't be legally hauled and will need to be removed before pickup.

How much space do I need for delivery?

Plan for about 60 feet of straight approach length and 10.5 feet of width for delivery and pickup, plus enough overhead clearance for the truck's hoist — no low branches or power lines above the drop spot.
